Lip Thrill Thursday: Katy Kat Matte by Covergirl

I am finally reviewing Katy Perry's Katy Kat Matte lipsticks by Covergirl. I bought these at the drugstore after their release, picking up the only four colors left in the display. I'm actually pretty shocked that these sold the way they did because there's so much wrong with them.

Let's talk about the good first. The packaging is pretty cute. The covers are a matte white with simple black lettering on the tube. That being said, these are not staying any type of white in your bag or honestly, even on display. They get dirty so easily.

The bottom part of the tube displays the name of the color and cute little cat ears. The lipsticks are all super moisturizing and very cushiony on your lips.

The first real problem I had with the colors is that they weren't really pigmented. They all swatched very sheer and not matte at all. That brings me to my second problem with these lipsticks. If you go to the website, these lipsticks are actually marketed as Demi-Matte. That is not written anywhere on the packaging on the lipsticks themselves or on any of the displays I saw them in. I get that covergirl is trying to jump on the matte hype but releasing a product you are marketing as a matte lipstick and it not being a matte lipstick at all, is shady. I'm not a huge fan of Covergirl cosmetics in general, but I decided to give them a try. I completely regret that I did.

Cat Call is a nice pink color which is pretty but not flattering on my skin tone whatsoever. It, like all of the other colors I picked up, is very sheer and settled into the lines of my lips. Since I do have darker lips, the lipstick went on really patchy and translucent, since the lipstick itself isn't really pigmented. Also, very much not matte.

Crimson Cat is a very nice orange based red that is a little more pigmented than the other colors I picked up and a lot more flattering. This is one of those universal reds that would look good on a multitude of skin tones. It doesn't settle as much as the others and has a soft feel to it. It is also not a matte lipstick.

Maroon Meow disappointed me the most. I love a good maroon lipstick and this was such a huge let down. I honestly get more pigment from some Jordana's $1.99 lip crayons. It's sheer and creamy but it makes it hard to apply. It also feathers and did I mention it's not matte. At all. Not even a little bit.

Perry Panther is the black color in the collection that Katy actually has on in the display. Once again, the lack of pigment on this makes it difficult to apply. You also can't build up the color because it's very creamy and moves all over the places on your lips if you try and settles into your lip lines. Also, surprise, surprise, this one is also not matte. :/

I didn't necessarily have high hopes about this collection. I worked in cosmetics retail so I'm very familiar with Covergirl products. The thing that infuriates me is the fact that they want to call these lipsticks matte when they're not at all. It's such a shady thing to do that makes me as a consumer want nothing to do with them as a company.

Have you tried these lipsticks? If you haven't, what's the most disappointing lip product you've recently purchased? Let me know in the comments section below. Love you guys!

    1. I was so disappointed that these weren't matte. They're not even "Demi-matte" I thought it was my batch for a second but looked up reviews and found that it's just how the lipsticks are :/

  4. Wow! Those are definitely just regular, sheer lipsticks. Nothing wrong with that other than how they are marketed as something they are not.

  7. I keep seeing these in stores and part of me wants them and the other part doesn't. That's such a bummer that they're sheer and kind of shady that they're advertising them as matte every where else, or everywhere I've seen them it's all about the matte but on the website they're considered demi-matte. I may pick one up because I like wearing sheer colors. I haven't built up the confidence to wear fully opaque ones! I always feel weird. The colors are pretty though.

    1. Sheer colors are nice for summer. These are really nice, it's the shadiness of how they're advertising them that puts me off. I honestly don't even feel that they're demi-matte. It took me a minute to build up to wearing really bold lips but now I love it and usually go for a bold lip and neutral eye.
