50 Shades Of Me: Yes, Brown People Tan Too

No, I'm not wearing a too dark foundation, I've been sun burned. Many people think that just because you're darker skinned, you don't tan or burn. No matter what your natural skin color is, you can get sun damaged, and burning is never fun. The stinging and pain followed by the itching, peeling and scaling is not something that one looks forward to in the summer months. Here are a couple of tips to help your skin, especially your face, get back on track.

1) HYDRATE
Water is a must. Drink tons of it. I'm drinking a gallon a day. You don't have to go that far but you should be drinking a lot of it. Water is amazing for you. It helps keep your skin moisturized from the inside out. The dryer your skin looks, the worse your fine lines, wrinkles and pores appear. Plus, water helps keep you fuller longer and energizes your muscles after a workout.

2)FIND SUNSCREEN THAT WORKS FOR YOU
Don't stop putting on sunscreen just because you think it doesn't work. Try something different. If the sprays don't work for you, switch to sunblock lotions, and if that doesn't work, look for things with Zinc Oxide. Travel size samples of sunscreen are perfect for trying things out that way you don't have to buy bottle after bottle to see what works for you. Remember to ask the cosmetician at your local drug store for samples or coupons because they get tons of them and are probably more than happy to help you if you're nice.

3)LOTION UP
If you're burned, along with drinking water and continued use of sunscreen, moisturizing your body from the outside in is very important. Try to use a natural body butter with shea butters, aloe, coconut oil, etc, that will help your skin heal. For your face, make sure to use a serum as well as a moisturizer, just to help your burned skin heal. Load up on lotions with Vitamin E and Vitamin C. Moisturize a couple of times a day to help as much as possible.

4)MAKE YOUR LIPS KISSABLE
Don't forget your lips burn too. Make sure to use lipbalm with an SPF. Chapstick makes a great one as well as Burt's Bees. A big mistake is using lipgloss in the sun. The shine of your gloss acts like an oil, reflects the sun and basically burns your lips. Make sure to exfoliate your lips if they do get burned by gently rubbing sugar and petroleum jelly on your lips. This will slough off the chapped skin and help with healing them. And don't forget to moisturize them as well, if they've burned. Use a natural based lip balm or just plain old cocoa butter to moisturize.

5)EXFOLIATE
Sloughing off your dead skin is great for helping your skin renew and also helps with discoloration, which a lot of the times is caused by sunburns. Shaving your legs also helps exfoliate them. If you're peeling or burned, don't use anything gritty or it will hurt.

Hopefully these tips will help you heal your skin and get back to a more natural even skin tone.
